first sale doctrine

A defense to infringement codified in Section 109(a) of the Copyright Act: “notwithstanding the provisions of section 106(3) the owner of a particular copy or phonorecords law-fully made is entitled, without the authority or the copyright owner, to sell, or otherwise dispose of the possession of that copy or phonorecord.”
